What is Montessori Education?

People often ask me, ‘What is Montessori education?’

My answer is always the same:

Montessori education is based on educating the whole child. Education our children to enter this world as wonderful human beings, with kind hearts, strong morals and a sense of pride and worth. We give children a voice, choice and freedom within limits.

We don’t believe in ranking or grading our children in an archaic hierarchy, where the best are at the top and the worst at the bottom. We are each unique and shine In our own way. You cannot grade a child’s empathy, time management or enthusiasm, but these important skills are often overlooked in modern educational pedagogies.

Montessori children are not educated to pass an exam or make the teacher happy be proving how good they are at a certain subject. Montessori children are educated for life, they are given freedom within limits to explore new pathways, to make mistakes and to complete work at their own pace, with whom they wish and with enthusiasm and passion.

Montessori allows children to discover who they are and what they want, from a very early age. Imagine for a second, if I told you that you would know exactly what you wanted out of life from a very age 6? Imagine that!

That’s Montessori!

For those who say, it is impossible to have this pedagogy in modern society, as we require grades, ranking and scores to assess our children, I would argue that you are maybe not looking in the right places?

Observe a Montessori child when given an independent task, observe a Montessori child when she sees another in distress, observe a Montessori child when in deep conversation about a global issue such as inequality and then, and only then will you understand what education is all about!

Have a lovely day!
