Critical Thinking for all Ages!

Are you trying to inspire critical thinking in your classroom? Well there’s a simple way to organise your lessons. It’s all based around the 6 key questions?

These can be placed on the wall, or on a task card to help structure research.

For example you’re trying to organise a research project on climate change? Or the use of fossil fuels and you really want your class to structure their research to come up with valid arguments and reasoning.

It’s simple! Present these questions to your class.

Who – benefits from this? Is it harmful to? Makes decisions about this? Is most directly affected?

What – are the good and bad points? Is another opinion? Is another alternative? Is the best/worst case scenario?

Where – is this happening in the real world? Are there similar concepts? Is there the most need for this? In the world do we see this problem?

When – is this behaviour acceptable? Would this benefit our society? Would this cause a problem? Is the best time to take action?

Why – is this actually a problem? Is this an issue for me? Are people talking about this? Should people know about this?

How – do we know the truth about this? Will we approach this safety? Could this benefit or harm our a society? Can we change this?

  1. Marvellous questions!
Critical thinking can be apply in all areas within our lives. It help us to acknowledge our own actions and reflect so that we can change, reform our ideas and goals.

  2. Fascinating – like all your thought provoking articles.

Those key words are the same as asked by Geographers. Who.. What.. Where… etc. However, the way you use them is really thought provoking.

Thank you for all you do provoking educationalists to think more about their profession.
