The university of York has released a study confirming that as adults we must expose our children to a huge amount of words from a very young age.
Just because they can’t reply, doesn’t mean they can’t comprehend. Language not only allows for literacy rates to flourish but has also been linked to numerical awareness, sequencing, order and rational thought processing.
Essentially, our words really matter. As a parent and a teacher you MUST choose them carefully.
Here are some alternatives.
Stop crying = has something made you sad, can you breathe slowly and tell me about it?
Get in with your work = What are you busy with at the moment?
Stop it! = Do you think that’s the right thing to do?
Be quiet = Can you use a softer voice?
What a mess!! = someone has been having fun, how can we clean it up?
Do you need Help? = I’m here to help if you need me.
I explained how to do this yesterday = Maybe I can show you another way?
Do I need to seperate you two? = maybe you need a break?
You’re ok = How are you feeling?
It’s not that hard = you can do hard things.
We don’t talk like that = please use nice words.
