The True Definition of School

The world’s curriculums are too crowded, the expectations on teachers are too high and the profession has been brought to its knees by the understanding of education from those in charge.

Those who push for higher grades, better scores whilst jostling for position as the best school in the country, or the best child in the class.

A teacher’s job is not to teach but to inspire, to ignite the flame of intrigue in every child and when we allow them to find their educational niche, we are finally able to truly understand our students. We understand how they learn, who they like to learn with and what their true superpowers are.

One thing is for sure, skills such as empathy, love, understanding, determination, and resilience will always have a place, no matter what the future holds.

And If we want that future to have blue skies, green forests and equality and acceptance for all, then our understanding of the concept of school must change.

School is not a place where we get everything right, achieve all grade As or get 100%.

It is a place where its OK to make mistakes, try new things and experiment with the unknown. It is a place where the children have the confidence to try and the resilience to fail, ad try again.

  1. Well said but I worry that those who are supposed to promote these values, ideas and beliefs have no sense of what you are saying or they don’t want to have. Uneducated people help them to continue as they do.

  2. Totally agree Gavin. Wish could pass these on to others who can implement. As I see it, we need robust discussions around the understanding of what education Is all about, with the right peoples who can organise, implement flow with the philosophy that makes so much sense. Thanks for sharing
