Should we really be reading aloud to the children in our classes?
Reading aloud to the children in our homes and our classrooms is of enormous benefit to our children, and here’s why?
1. Babies are born learning. From birth to three years, the brain is like a sponge absorbing all that wonderful language and storing it for later use. At age 4 the flood gates open, so read, read, read. (Aloud)
2. Books inspire discussion surrounding difficult topics such as friendship, kindness and inclusion. They can be great gateways into difficult topics.
3. Parents and teachers who read aloud inspire their children to see reading as a pleasure, as fun and as a way of relaxing. “Model the behaviour you wish to view”
4. It helps parents and teachers to bond. Is there really anything better than seeing a child excited to read the next chapter of the book?
5. It’s sets the foundations for literacy skills. Comprehension, phonics, speaking and listening, vocabulary. Read with passion, vigour and excitement and you’ll have your kids hooked!
6. The number of words your child knows as they enter kindergarten is a great indicator or their immediate success in learning, understanding and communicating in the classroom. You can help by reading to them.
