Rethink “Additional Needs”

Isn’t it about time we stopped thinking of additional needs as something negative?

I mean some of the most famous people in the world have additional needs. They give us a new way of thinking, a new perspective, a different point of view.

Let’s not take those children out of the classroom to a special ‘additional needs’ room. Let’s promote inclusion, diversity and an understanding that we are all on the spectrum somewhere, I mean it’s a spectrum.

Here are some people who you might know who learn differently:

• Orlando Bloom (Dyslexia)

• Michael Phelps (ADHD)

• Daniel Radcliffe Harry Potter (Dyspraxia)

• Steven Spielberg (Dyslexia)

If we take ADHD as an example: we think of children with symptoms such as: hyperactivity, impulsivity and distractible.

And yes these might be true but children with ADHD are also creative, fun, generous, outspoken, passionate, humorous, energetic, empathetic, spontaneous, authentic, inclusive, charismatic, romantic, opinionated, kind, intuitive, intuitive, friendly, honest, positive, entertaining, curious, friendly, inspiring, eager, memorable, adventurous, brave, resilient, influential, resourceful, talkative, unique, musical.

Not additional needs, just ‘Needs’ !❤️
