Calling all teachers. Print out this picture and put it on your classroom wall. It’s a great tool for reading and pronunciation.

There are 16 vowel sounds in English. Yes, only 5 vowels – a, e, i, o, u but they represent 16 different sounds!

There are so many ways to write the same sound, all these words make the “oooo” sound but spelt differently. blue, shoe, new, too, two, do, juice, you, cute, beautiful… no wonder our kids find it hard.

On this chart, each vowel sound is paired with the color that holds that sound in its name.

Regardless of spelling the words ‘blue, shoe, new, too, two, do, juice, you, cute, beautiful” are Blue words because they share the same main vowel sound.

Every English word has a vowel sound linked to a colour below.

Try it out, write your name in the comments box and the colour that goes with it.

Share this status far and wide and let’s help millions of teachers all over the world.
