There are 16 vowel sounds in English. Yes, only 5 vowels – a, e, i, o, u but they represent 16 different sounds!
There are so many ways to write the same sound, all these words make the “oooo” sound but spelt differently. blue, shoe, new, too, two, do, juice, you, cute, beautiful… no wonder our kids find it hard.
On this chart, each vowel sound is paired with the color that holds that sound in its name.
Regardless of spelling the words ‘blue, shoe, new, too, two, do, juice, you, cute, beautiful” are Blue words because they share the same main vowel sound.
