Whilst teaching polygons to a group of 8 year olds, I asked the children how they would like to represent their research.
Some made books, others wanted to draw diagrams but one child asked a question that made my whole teaching career, my philosophy and my heart sing when he said:
“Gavin, can I design a poster with all the shapes on, and then give it to another class of younger students so they can learn about polygons?”
My smile widened, my heart sang and of course with an intention such as this is said yes:
When children understand that they not only have the power to change the future for others and they are given the opportunity to practise it regularly, we not only empower them but we make learning, real, tangible and purposeful.
