My grandfather always told me that if you want to learn the fundamental lessons of life you should surround yourself with the very old and the very young.
The young will teach you what’s important in life and the old will teach you the same.
One from experience and the other from their actions.
As children grow, they change from a child that only thinks in the present to one that can understand the future. This change in perception allows our children to establish a responsibility for their actions. It’s a crucial moment in a child’s educational journey as they begin to make future predictions and react to them.
If you’d like to test if your child has crossed the threshold simply do the “marshmallow” test.
Offer them 1 marshmallow now but if they wait 1 hour they can have 2. If they’re willing to wait they’re there. If not, then it’s time to have some deep conversations.
